A food cart is the cheapest way into street food. No truck, no driver's license for a commercial vehicle, no kitchen lease. You push it to where people already are: a station exit, a market, a festival gate. In the US alone, people search for "food cart" about 22,200 times a month.

Starting out costs €4,300 to €10,000 if you import the cart yourself from a manufacturer on Alibaba. A single stainless steel push cart lists at about €1,220. Most of the rest goes to shipping, permits and a cash buffer. A cart doing 30 to 50 sales a day can clear €1,200 to €4,000 a month before you pay yourself. Here is how the numbers work.

The short version
  • Startup cost: €4,300 to €10,000, with the cart itself at €1,220 to €1,760 on Alibaba.
  • Profit: €1,200 to €4,000 a month before your own wage, at 30 to 50 sales a day.
  • Break-even: 4 to 9 months for most setups.
  • Best models: coffee at commuter spots, hot dogs at events, ice cream in summer, or renting the cart to brands.
  • Watch out: electric cargo bikes from China can carry EU anti-dumping duties. Check before you order one.

How we built this analysis

We pulled search volumes for 23 food cart keywords from DataForSEO (Google Ads and Labs data, United States, September 2026) and checked the top Google results for "how to start a food cart business". For equipment we looked at 17 Alibaba listings for push carts, kiosks and electric food tricycles, and used the single-unit price each one shows. Dollar prices are converted at 1 EUR = 1.14 USD. Landed costs use EU duty rates and the Dutch VAT rate of 21%. Revenue figures in the business ideas are worked examples, not promises: change them to your own prices in the calculator.

Caveats: Alibaba prices are asking prices. Ask for a written quote before you budget. Supplier ratings and order counts were not verified at the time of writing. Check them on the listing before you order. Search volumes are US figures. EU volumes are lower but follow the same seasonal pattern.

Four ways to make money with a food cart

A food cart is a tool, not a business plan. What you sell, where and to whom decides what you earn. These four models use the same kind of cart in very different ways. The numbers are worked examples: swap in your own prices in the calculator below.

1

Commuter coffee cart

Every train station and office park has a morning rush where people want coffee in under a minute. A coffee cart sells to that rush and is gone by eleven.

StrategyPick one spot with a fixed morning crowd and get a permit for it. Keep the menu to five drinks so you can serve someone every 40 seconds. Add a lunch shift at a second spot once the morning is steady.
Revenue modelDaily sales at a fixed spot
The numbers
  • Cart: Electric coffee cargo bike with fridge, €2,720 on Alibaba
  • Example: 100 coffees a day at €3.50, 22 days = €7,700 a month
  • Coffee, milk and cups at about €0.70 a drink = €1,540 a month
  • Search demand: "mobile coffee cart" 6,600 a month, "coffee kiosk" 3,600 (US)
Best forEarly risers who can make a good flat white fast.
2

Hot dog cart at events

Festivals, football matches and markets bring hundreds of hungry people to one place for a few hours. A hot dog cart is cheap, quick to serve and easy to move.

StrategyBook weekend events and add a weekday market. Sell two or three items only, priced in round numbers so you can handle cash and cards fast. Your best days will carry the month.
Revenue modelEvent days + weekly market
The numbers
  • Cart: Stainless steel hand push cart, €1,220 on Alibaba
  • Example: 8 event days with 200 sales at €5 = €8,000 a month
  • Food cost around 30% = €2,400, before spot fees
  • Search demand: "hot dog cart for sale" 6,600 a month (US)
Best forPeople who like crowds and don't mind working weekends.
3

Ice cream cart for summer and private events

Ice cream sells itself in June and barely at all in January. Searches for "ice cream cart" nearly triple between winter and early summer. Private bookings help you earn even on a cloudy day.

StrategyTrade at parks and beaches on hot days, and sell fixed packages to weddings, company days and children's parties. Package bookings are paid up front, so the weather risk moves to the organiser.
Revenue modelStreet sales + prepaid event packages
The numbers
  • Cart: Electric food vending tricycle with awning, €1,320 on Alibaba (add a freezer unit)
  • Example: 6 bookings a month at a €350 package price = €2,100
  • Plus street sales on warm weekends
  • Search demand: "ice cream cart" 9,900 a month, peaking at 18,100 in June (US)
Best forSomeone who wants a seasonal side business with a quiet winter.
4

Rent your cart to brands

Drink and snack brands pay agencies to hand out samples at stations, campuses and events. They need a good-looking cart and someone to run it.

StrategyBuy one or two carts with a clean, neutral look and offer them by the day to marketing agencies, with or without staff. Wrap the cart in the client's colours for each campaign. You don't need food permits if the brand provides pre-packed samples, but check this for each campaign.
Revenue modelDay rental + optional staffing
The numbers
  • Cart: Electric cafe bike, €1,270 on Alibaba, plus freight and duties (see the e-bike warning below)
  • Example: 8 rental days a month at €150 a day = €1,200
  • At that rate the listing price is covered in about one month of rentals
  • No food stock, no spoilage
Best forSomeone with contacts in marketing or events who prefers B2B over serving customers.

What does it cost to start a food cart?

The cart itself is the smallest big expense. A stainless steel push cart lists at €1,220 on Alibaba and a big-wheel kiosk at about €1,760. Freight, VAT, permits and a buffer for slow weeks bring the total to €4,300 to €10,000.

TIP

Start with the push cart. It is the cheapest option and needs no motor paperwork. Once you know which spot and menu work, add a second cart or upgrade to an electric one.

Which cart should you buy?

Start with what you will sell. A push cart is enough for hot dogs or snacks. Coffee needs power for a grinder and a fridge for milk, so an electric bike or a cart with a battery makes life easier.

BEFORE YOU ORDER AN ELECTRIC BIKE

The EU charges anti-dumping and countervailing duties on electric bicycles from China, and pedal-assist cargo trikes can fall under them. That can add more than the price of the bike. Ask a customs broker to check the HS code before you pay. A push cart or a cart without a motor avoids the issue.

What will you actually pay to get it here?

The listing price is only part of what you pay. A cart travels in a shared container (LCL), so you pay for the space it takes plus handling at the port. Here is what one push cart costs landed in the Netherlands.

CostEstimateNotes
Cart (1 unit)€1,220US$1,390 listing price

Is a food cart a good business?

A food cart is cheap to start and easy to move. It also means long days outside and sales that follow the weather. Here is the honest picture.

Strengths

  • Lowest startup cost of any street food format
  • Go where the crowd is: stations, markets, events
  • Small menu means fast service and little waste
  • Easy to test before you invest in a truck or a shop

Weaknesses

  • Weather decides a lot of your sales
  • Limited storage, so you restock every day
  • Long days standing outside
  • Income depends on you being there

Opportunities

  • Private events and weddings paid up front
  • Renting carts to brands for sampling campaigns
  • A second cart once the first spot works
  • Seasonal switches: ice cream in summer, hot drinks in winter

Threats

  • Stand permits that are limited or slow to get
  • A café opening next to your spot
  • Rising ingredient and cup prices
  • Import duties on electric carts from China

Where should you park your cart?

Where you stand matters more than what you sell. You want people who pass at the same time every day and have a reason to stop.

Good Signs

  • Steady foot traffic at fixed times: station exits, office parks, campuses
  • Weekly markets and festivals that rent out vendor spots
  • No other coffee or snack seller within sight
  • Shelter nearby, so a rain shower does not empty the street
  • A spot where people can stop without blocking a path or a door

Red Flags

  • Your municipality has no free stand permits or a long waiting list
  • Busy places where people walk past fast and never stop (main shopping streets at rush hour)
  • A café or bakery right next to you selling the same thing
  • No access to water or a toilet during a full trading day
  • Event organisers asking a fixed fee that eats your first 100 sales

How do you get started?

The order matters. Check the permit for your spot before you buy the cart. Some cities have waiting lists that are longer than the shipping time.

  1. Choose your model and spot

    Week 1–2

Decide what you will sell and where. Visit three possible spots at the hours you would trade and count how many people pass and stop.

    • Pick one of the four business models
    • Write a menu of three to five items with prices
    • Count foot traffic at three spots, morning and lunch
    • Ask the municipality about stand permits and waiting times
  2. Order the cart

    Week 2–4

Compare suppliers on Alibaba, ask for photos, a video call and the CE declaration, and pay through Trade Assurance.

    • Shortlist three carts with single-unit prices
    • Check rating, order history and years on Alibaba
    • Ask for the CE declaration and gas/electrical certificates
    • Get a freight quote for a shared container to your port
    • Pay through Trade Assurance, never by direct transfer
  3. Paperwork while it ships

    Week 4–10

Shipping takes four to eight weeks. Use that time for registration, insurance, branding and suppliers.

    • Register your business
    • Complete the hygiene course
    • Apply for the stand permit or book event spots
    • Get liability insurance
    • Order cups, packaging and a card reader
  4. Open at one spot

    Week 10–14

Start three or four days a week at your best spot. Track sales per day and per item, then add events.

    • Do two practice days with friends
    • Open at your best spot
    • Post your location on Instagram every day you trade
    • Target: 30 sales a day by the end of month one

Run your own numbers

Put in your own ticket price and daily sales. The defaults assume 45 sales a day at €8 for 20 days a month. For a quiet spot, try 30 sales a day. For event days, try 150 or more.

The quick result shows a full month at those numbers. Your first months will be slower while people find you: open the 12-month projection to see the ramp-up, which is where the 4 to 9 month break-even comes from.

Food cart questions people ask

The questions people ask most about starting a food cart, answered with the numbers from this guide.

€4,300 to €10,000 if you import the cart from Alibaba yourself. The cart is €1,220 to €1,760. Freight, VAT, permits, insurance and two months of working capital make up the rest.

At 30 to 50 sales a day and a €7 to €8 average ticket, a cart clears about €1,200 to €4,000 a month before you pay yourself. Event days can bring in three to four times a normal day.

Yes. In the Netherlands you register with the Chamber of Commerce (KvK), follow a hygiene code, and need a stand permit from your municipality or a vendor spot at an event. Other countries have similar rules.

Coffee, because the ingredients cost little per cup. Hot dogs and ice cream also work well because they are quick to serve. Keep the menu to a few items.

Most setups break even in 4 to 9 months. A busy spot with a low startup budget gets there faster.

Often, but not always. A €1,220 push cart costs about €2,250 to €2,860 once it is in the Netherlands. Compare that to a local quote before you order.
